In our recent High Scholar Boost class, we embarked on an exploration of self-care through an African-centered perspective, reinforcing the importance of balance, cultural connection, and self-empowerment.
Our session was not just about surface-level self-care; we dug deep into the foundational principles of African traditions that emphasize community, spirituality, and holistic well-being. We discussed self-care as an act of resistance and renewal, highlighting how rest, creativity, and movement have long been integral to Black and African diasporic traditions. Through engaging discussions and reflective exercises, participants examined how their own self-care routines can be enhanced by embracing cultural wisdom

Cultural Identity & Expression vs. Material Self-Image
Western self-care often focuses on external self-improvement—new clothes, spa days, and curated aesthetics. In contrast, we explore self-care through cultural expression. Whether it’s through cooking ancestral dishes, storytelling, or wearing traditional attire that honors our roots, self-care is about affirming who we are at our core.

Community & Collective Well-Being vs. Individual Solitude
While Western self-care often encourages “me time,” African-centered self-care is deeply communal. Gathering with family, participating in rites of passage programs, or simply sharing wisdom with the next generation are powerful ways we nurture our well-being together.
Nature & Environmental Balance vs. Escape to Luxury
Rather than seeing nature as a place to ‘vacation,’ we honor it as a source of balance. Taking walks in our neighborhoods, engaging with the land, and absorbing the healing power of sunlight are ways we stay connected to the natural world.

Holistic Health: Mind, Body & Spirit vs. Surface-Level Wellness
Western wellness often highlights fitness trends and diet culture. We embrace self-care as a holistic practice—through ancestral movements, libation ceremonies for spiritual cleansing, and eating foods that nourish not just the body, but the spirit.
Ancestral Connection vs. Trendy Spirituality
Meditation and mindfulness have been commercialized, but we ground these practices in ancestral connection. Pouring libations, listening to elders’ stories, and honoring our ancestors through daily rituals keeps us deeply rooted in who we are.
Healing Through Storytelling vs. Commercialized Therapy
While therapy is valuable, we also recognize the healing power of oral tradition. Sharing experiences, passing down family history, and using creative expression—like stop-motion animation or poetry—allows us to process emotions and build resilience.
Grounding Through Purpose vs. Self-Care as an Escape
Instead of treating self-care as a retreat from life, we integrate it into our purpose. We teach scholars that self-care means aligning actions with their highest calling—whether that’s through art, leadership, or innovation.
